AOG Parts Delivery: Next Flight Out, Hand-Carry, or Dedicated Ground?
Short answer
An AOG part moves one of four ways: next flight out, hand-carry, air charter, or dedicated ground. The deadline picks the winner, not the distance. Under 500 miles a van beats a flight door to door; above 1,000 miles with a deadline inside a day, air wins. And some parts cannot legally fly with a passenger at all.
What Are the Four Ways an AOG Part Actually Moves?
- Next flight out (NFO). The part is tendered on the next flight with space. Fast when a flight exists, but it must clear the cargo cut-off and be recovered and driven at the far end.
- Hand-carry. A courier buys a seat and travels with the part. Custody never breaks. Expensive, and limited by what a passenger may carry.
- Air charter. An aircraft is hired for the shipment. It goes when you say and lands where scheduled carriers do not, and it costs the most.
- Dedicated ground. A van carries the part and nothing else, pickup to delivery. No terminals, no cut-offs, no airport handling. Departure is an hour or two.

Why Doesn’t the Fastest Mode Win by Distance Alone?
Because door-to-door time is not flight time. An NFO move is a ground leg to the airport, tender before the cargo cut-off, dwell until departure, the flight, recovery at the far end, then a ground leg to the hangar. A van has one interval, driving, and it starts on dispatch. Compare time from the phone call to the part in a technician’s hand.
The Mode Cut-off
The cut-off is where one mode stops being fastest and the next takes over. It moves with the deadline, not only the distance.

Three overrides sit on top of the table and each wins outright: the part cannot legally fly with a passenger, the destination has no airport a carrier serves, or custody must not break.
When Does Hand-Carry Beat Next Flight Out?
Both put the part on the same aircraft, so hand-carry looks like NFO with a babysitter. It is not. Cargo closes before passengers do. Freight has to be tendered, screened and built up well ahead of departure, while a ticketed passenger with the part in hand checks in far later. Once the cargo cut-off has passed, hand-carry is the only way onto that aircraft.
The second reason is custody: the part is never handed to anyone, never sits in a cargo facility, never gets sorted. Hand-carry is not a speed upgrade, and where neither condition applies, NFO does the same job for less.
What Stops a Part From Flying at All?
This override is regulatory, not commercial. Hazardous materials carried aboard an aircraft by a passenger are permitted only for the items enumerated in 49 CFR §175.10, an exceptions list for personal effects. An aircraft component is not on it. A part with a lithium battery, a pressurized accumulator, residual hydraulic fluid or an oxidizer moves as declared cargo, or it does not move by air.
Two consequences follow. Hand-carry is off the table for a large share of AOG components however urgent the situation. And declared dangerous goods add packaging, documentation and acceptance time at the airport, which can push an NFO move past the point where ground would have arrived first.

When Is Dedicated Ground the Fastest Option?
More often than the word suggests, because road transit is arithmetic you can do in advance. A solo driver may drive 11 hours inside a 14-hour window, after 10 consecutive hours off duty, with a 30-minute break before 8 hours of driving, under 49 CFR §395.3. That is roughly 600 road miles a day; a two-driver team covers double.
- Under 500 miles: a van dispatched within the hour arrives inside a working day, which is why same-day and next-day are ground questions at this range.
- 500–1,000 miles: a team arrives overnight, and whether air wins depends on whether a suitable flight exists at the right hour.
- Coast to coast: a team covers it in about two and a half days of continuous running, slower than flying but dramatically cheaper.
The other advantage is predictability. A road transit is a calculation; a flight is a booking that can be canceled, rerouted or bumped for weight. When a deadline has no slack, fewer external dependencies is the safer bet.
What to Ask Before You Book
- What is the deadline, in hours from now? Not “urgent”. A number tied to a real event.
- Is the part hazmat, and in what class? This can eliminate hand-carry outright.
- Does a scheduled flight fit, and has its cargo cut-off passed? If it has, NFO is not an option even though the flight is.
- What is at each end? Airport-to-hangar legs are part of the transit, and remote destinations erase an air advantage.
- Must custody stay unbroken? If yes, the choice narrows to hand-carry or dedicated ground.
Answered in that order, those five usually decide the mode before a price is quoted: the constraints eliminate options, and only then does cost choose between what is left. That is the discipline behind any emergency freight recovery.
